Alaska Aces Took Game 1!

Alaska Aces draws first blood in the semifinals series against Rain or Shine,Aces is now leading 1-0. They barely beaten Rain or Shine Elasto Painters,80-87. Thanks to their tremendous run in the 2nd half and suffocating defense. Rain or Shine was leading as much as 17 points in the 1st half.

As coach Compton said,"I was really proud of our guys because they weathered the storm and after halftime, we chipped the lead away and put our frustrations aside." But it's still one win and it takes four to prevail in the series. “It’s nice to win, but you have to get four (wins), so we have to watch the tape and get better," Alex Compton noted.

Win Factors:

  • JVee in Payback Mode -JVee Casio chipped in 16pts and 3asts and draining three treys. Casio was playing aggressive all game! He was active attacking the basket and when he's open he didn't hesitate to shoot! Clearly last conference lost to Rain or Shine in the semis is still fresh in his mind. He wants payback! When JVee is playing like this you know he meant business.
  • Finally The Boss -Sonny Thoss after a looong slump,he find himself chipping 16pts with 9rebs against Rain or Shine frontline! This is what Alaska Aces have been waiting for. They can't win a championship if Thoss goes on in his slump. Finally he had stepped up tonight and hopefully it is just a start.
  •  "Harmless" Lee -I quoted harmless because he wasn't "lethal" tonight, which is Alaska Aces really wants to happen in this series. He only had 7pts on 3-of-13 shooting. Alaska can let Jeff Chan scores 17pts but not Paul Lee,simply because the offense of ROS runs with Lee. Alaska did a good job containing Paul Lee in this game. We know when he is ON most of the time Rain or Shine win. When he takeover,he will take over. He is the barometer of ROS. Alaska should continue this to win the series.
Extra Factors:
  • The Beast duo was fantastic tonight. When you have Calvin Abueva and Ping Exciminiano both on the floor that's trouble for the opponent. Their energy in defense is so contagious! Ping "The Ex Factor" Exciminiano had 2 steals. His undying energy in defense is priceless. With just limited playing time he is contributing big in the team's success. Meanwhile after a 2 game slump,Calvin is back in business with another double double(14pts 14rebs 5asts). Tonight he has the last laugh against Belga. lol
  • That RJ Jazul 10-point explosion in the 3rd quarter was huge! His back-to-back trey that ignited the 3rd quarter run by the Aces really help. Sometimes you'll hate him for holding the ball too long and taking bad shots, but this time you'll just take the good with the bad. Dondon was struggling and Jazul stepped up!
OFF:
  • Dondon who normally gave Alaska at least 2 treys a game was off tonight. He is scoreless, shot 0/4 from beyond the arc tonight. Totally off. Alaska needs his offense to win in this series. Alaska Aces weakness is offense. They lack firepower especially now that Cyrus is back on shooting bricks,2/10 from the field tonight.
  • After Manuel's brilliant game against Meralco Bolts, he was hard to notice in this game. Only 4 points,on 2/8 shooting from the field. He is having a problem posting up Quinahan and Belga, they are much bigger than Hodge. He have to beat them off the dribble. Gotta use his versatility, that's the difference between Manuel and Espinas. Espinas dominates with brute strength and Manuel is the versatile one.
